Each year, the Houston Press Club recognizes the best work done throughout the state in a range of media platforms with its Lone Star Awards. The awards cover work done the previous year.
I couldn’t make it to this year’s Lone Star Awards dinner in July, so I admit I forgot about them, even though I’d had four entries in the contest and I knew two of those entries were finalist, meaning they would win first, second or third place. I was working late in my office that Friday when the editor of the Buzz magazines, one of several (non-GlobalWrites) publications I write for, called me excitedly.
“You won!” was the first thing she said. “Um, what?” was my intelligent response.
My article for those sibling magazines, “Still Crazy for Comics,” (not one of my best stories, I think) won first place in the Lone Star Awards. It won in the Magazine Article category, beating out articles from Austin Monthly, UPBeat and other entrants. The judges said of the article, “A fun piece that opens up a new world. Well written and fun.”
That wasn’t my first Lone Star win; I’ve won first place for newsletter articles and print newsletters, and in 2008, I won PR Communicator of the Year for my overall portfolio. But this was my first first-place win outside the corporate communications sphere.
It had been a fun article to write. I love comics, and it was enjoyable talking with others who were even more serious about them than I am — and it made me feel a little less dorky for still reading them.
That night, I also won third place for best Public Relations Publication for a newsletter I write for the Cy-Fair Chamber of Commerce, which had also won third place in Newsletter category at the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives Conference media awards.
